Volunteers Needed for New LIA Guides

The Laser Institute of America (LIA) is announcing a volunteer project for members who are experts in the fields of laser welding, joining, cladding and additive manufacturing. It is our goal to produce two guides – the LIA Guide to Laser Welding and Joining and the LIA Guide to Laser Cladding and Additive Manufacturing – which will be based on this subject matter. If you are interested in sharing your insight on these technologies with the laser community at large, please contact the LIA to find out how you can get involved.

The guides will help to promote laser usage in welding, joining, cladding and additive manufacturing, especially to those interested in the possibilities and potential these techniques represent. These publications will be viewed by the laser processing community as invaluable resources in their business and research endeavors. They will provide a basic overview of each application, concentrating mostly on the practical aspects of these fast-growing fields of laser technology.

The guides will be easy to read and provide the reader with the essential information needed for a general comprehension of laser welding, joining, cladding and additive manufacturing.

Each guide will include chapters on the following topics:

  • Description of laser welding, joining, cladding and additive manufacturing processes
  • Materials used in laser welding, joining, cladding and additive manufacturing
  • Categories/methods of laser welding, joining, cladding and additive manufacturing
  • Laser systems and other equipment
  • Applications and market opportunities
  • Monitoring and control
  • Safety

The LIA Guide to Laser Welding and Joining and the LIA Guide to Laser Cladding and Additive Manufacturing will each be written by a team of experts in the respective fields in cooperation with the LIA. The LIA is looking for contributing authors for these books. If you are an engineer or researcher who works in these areas and would be interested in participating in the development of these guides, please contact Chandler Gifford at cgifford@laserinstitute.org or call 1-800-345-2737 ext. 14.
